Cataplexy...

... is a medical condition. Read the official jargon here.

Cataplexy is also what happens to D when he gets very excited. No, not that kind of excited. Excited, as in, really eager beaver.

Said by D, after lunch on the way back to the office:

"You were supposed to eat dessert with me. In the end, I ate the mango-pomelo all by myself. You... deserted me."

And then he cataplexied.

Like that also funny.

Haiz.

DIY Brush Cleaner

Mac Brush Cleaner costs SGD18.

The most expensive component of my own concoction? The isopropyl alcohol (70%), which I bought at Guardian Pharmacy for SGD4.50. Everything else, I already had at home.

1 C distilled (or filtered) water
1/4 C isopropyl alcohol
1/2 T baby shampoo
1/2 T moisturising handwash liquid soap
1T leave-in conditioner

Mix everything together and pour into any plastic bottle, preferably wash and reuse an empty bottle. Don't go buying a special bottle. Afterall, the whole point is to (a) save money (b) reduce wastage, right?

Credit goes to EnkoreMakeup for this home brew recipe. Take note, Koren does say that lotion or cream types of leave-in conditioners will coagulate in the solution. Mine is a lotion type but I don't care. Each time I use it, I just shake it up a little to mix the solution together.

And credit goes to MakeupByTiffanyD for a quick, no mess way to clean brushes. No rinsing require and drying time is super duper fast! Basically, instead of dipping the brush into the cleansing solution, she damps a tissue (I use a paper towel) and then runs her brushes over the damp spot. Using this method with my denser Kabuki brushes means that I don't have a sopping wet brush sitting on the counter drying for a whole day.

CLEAN YOUR BRUSH AFTER EVERY USE!

And if you put on your makeup in the bathroom (like I do), then you owe it to yourself to put your brushes in a covered container. Just think about all the germs and residue you're rubbing onto your face if you leave your brushes exposed. And no, closing the toilet cover before you flush, does NOT reduce the "mist" that gets released into the air when your doo-doo is agitated by the swirling, gushing water. You just get hit by it the next time you open it.

Only registered users can comment now

I am getting a little tired of anonymous comments. Obviously, if its something positive they're saying, I don't mind at all. But its the occasional anonymous negative comments that are getting on my nerves. It's just one of my pet peeves that cowardly people have the biggest mouths of all.

I don't hide. Anyone who reads this blog not only knows my real name, but my picture is there for all to see too. It makes it easier for my detractors to recognize who to throw stones at, I guess. Ahh, the proverbial stone... thrown by people living in their glass houses.

Now, if someone has something disagreeable to say, they better be willing to put a name and email address to their comments. If they're too cowardly to do so, then they don't deserve to say anything at all.

Of course, people can always fake an id and still post their negative comments under the fake id. But really, if they're going to do go through all that trouble to hide themselves, then they must really not believe in what they have to say then.

This goes for emails, letters, or people who tell me "Hey someone said blah blah blah but I can't tell you who". If you can't tell who said those mean things, then you're just a gossipy troublemaker.

So, to anyone who has ever had a "discouraging word" flung at them anonymously, don't accept it. People can throw mud at you, and yes, some of it will get on you and you will feel hurt, betrayed, and probably spend a few precious hours agonizing over it. But then, that's it. Go take a bath. Metaphorical, literal, whatever.

Remember, if your critics are not going to respect themselves and hide behind anonymity, I don't see why you should give any credence to what they have to say either.

DIY make up brush holder

My version uses a Tupperware container & leftover gravel from J's aquarium hobby.

I do my makeup in the bathroom. So to protect the brushes from aerosol sprays, toilet flushing mist, moisture, dust, etc, I used a plastic Ikea bowl as a cover. Because it's a bowl, the dome shape compensates for the brushes that pop up through the rim of the container. Also, the bowl doubles up as my mixing bowl for my minerals.

For hygiene purposes, I don't use the caps of my mineral make up pots to "swirl, tap, buff". Mineral make up has no preservatives, so its a good idea to keep it as "isolated" as possible.

I used...

- and self-adhesive magnetic strips purchased from Popular bookshop that I cut and stuck to the lids of my pots.

Now all my pots of make up can be easily seen and selected. No more digging through boxes or drawers. Cheap & effective! Plus I did the environment a favour by recycling!! Well, except for the magnets. I have no idea where to get discarded magnets.

I'm awfully proud of myself.

I'd love to claim all the credit but it was J who thought of the biscuit tin cover idea. I was about to buy a bunch of metal rulers and glue them onto a discarded photo frame. J's way is much prettier! And cheaper -- haha!

Also the whole concept of sticking pots onto the wall/white board came from my Silk Naturals forum. A lady there did it and her make up collection is waaaaaaaaay more impressive than mine. Give me a few more years, I'll definitely need a whole stack of biscuit tins by then.

Silk Naturals Foundation = Drugs?

- "Pristine" perfecting glow (a very shimmery finishing dust)
- "Love Lure" perfecting powder (a sheer finishing dust)

and I got a free eye colors in "superstar" and "wisdom".

Actually, considering how addicted I am to mineral make up, these little packets of foundation mixes are my "drugs" of choice.

Hey, I don't drink, smoke, go clubbing, so I gotta have some form of vice to spend money on, right? A movie can cost me $6. So does a pot of eye shadow -- but I get hours more fun with it!

So... Play guitar hero world tour or perfect my foundation mix? Choices! Choices! So many choices!

Slender Shapes continues operations

Received an email from Richard yesterday (7 Nov) at 7.41pm:

Dear Slender Shapes Member

After many hours of talks with many potential investors during the last two weeks, we have finally come to an agreement which has resulted in the acquisition of three of our clubs, that being our Eunos Techpark branch, Bukit Timah branch at Goh & Goh building and our Serangoon Gardens branch. New owners will now own these three clubs. Unfortunately our branch at Tembeling Centre at East Coast will remain closed and will no longer be in operation.

All the members from Eunos Techpark, Bukit Timah and Serangoon Gardens will be able to continue their membership as before with no additional charges to be made. Many of the staff that you have got to know so well will also continue working at the clubs.

Members from Tembeling Centre will be able to transfer their membership free of charge to any of the other three branches should you wish to continue enjoying your membership at one of these locations. Please contact the relevant branch should you wish to take up this offer which will expire by 31st December 2008.

Serangoon Gardens: Tel – 62851131

Bukit Timah: Tel – 64688834

Eunos Techpark - 68440166

Operations of the three clubs will be suspended from November 8th to 16th giving the new owners time for the handover of the clubs, and will resume as usual on the morning of the 17th November.

I have tried everything possible to save as many of the staffs jobs and keep as many clubs open as possible so that members can continue to enjoy the services. I am sorry that I have not been able to save all clubs, but at least 3 out of 4 are better than nothing.

I would like to thank you for your support, and wish you all the very best in your continued pursuit in health and happiness.

Yours in good health,
Richard Lowe

I'm glad its all over. I do wish this whole fiasco could have been avoided in the first place, but I am not one to look a gift horse in a mouth.

an email to J, who is in Japan now...

... supervising students on a history school trip to Nagasaki and Fukuoka.

i think one of your fish learnt acrobatics while you were away.

remember when we left to send u to the airport? remember when u gave me instructions to feed the fish 3 pinches of food once a day? remember u bent down and i heard u flick some switch near the tank?

well, when i got home, i turned off the tank lights and thought: hmm, j flicked a switch, so maybe i should flick it off? so i turned off one of the switches -- i heard a "vooooo" sound stop. it's the little fan you use to keep the water in the tank bearable for the fish. so i turned that one on again, and turned the OTHER one off. i walked off. then i went to bed.

i came home tonite and i turned everything on. i looked up and thot: hmm, why is the water filling up at the filtration compartments... OH SHIT!

so i turned on the lights and your fish were quite still.

not upside down.

just still.

i threw food in and nobody wanted to eat it.

they just moved slightly.

so i called lionel. who proceeded to ask me stupid questions like : why would u turn off anything? and i answered: lionel, *now* is not the time to reflect on motives and purposes... one of the fish is swimming upside down.

anyway, its been about 40mins -- they're ok. they're swimming faster now. and the big ones are eating. the littler ones are ... well... i dunno.. they're not swarming the food. but i supposed oxygen is more impt than dinner.

they'll be fine. i think.

hopefully the acrobatic fish will feel better tomorrow morning.

i threw in a lot of food so if they get hungry later, they can play: hunt the food amongst the leaves.

i love u. please remember that u love me too. more than fishies.

Obama new president!

I'm getting spammed from my subscription to NYTimes.com's news alerts. Obama's looking good for the win. I know one person who would be happy. And one person who wouldn't. Let's call the latter, L.

L was vehement that Obama would ruin America. That McCain understands the global ramifications better. He's older, wiser, whatever. L went so far as to say that the world (including Singapore) would benefit from McCain's presidency. He had an audience and he was playing to it.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion. So, I kept my mouth shut. Except when I said, "So you would vote for McCain and risk Sarah Palin becoming president in a couple of years?"

His reply was to say with a patronizing chuckle, "That's not going to happen. You listen to too much rhetoric."

Excuse me, L, but isn't politics ALL ABOUT THE RHETORIC? Like McCain's camp doesn't have their own brand of rhetoric?

I wouldn't re-think a friendship just because of a difference in religious and political values -- unless that other person were trying to shove their beliefs down my throat.

And, I would re-think a friendship if I felt patronized.

I feel patronized.

See, now if Obama wins won I will have to struggle with the temptation not to be snarky. I shouldn't be catty and say to L: Well, I guess the majority of your countrymen disagree with you. Maybe they listened to too much rhetoric too?

Trouble is, I was never any good at resisting temptation.

Not only did they emote their puppets so well, they did it while playing multiple characters! They voice another puppet but the puppet in their hands still stayed in character! That's like trying to pat your head while rubbing circle on your tummy with the other hand. Sort of. You get the idea.

I also loved the songs...
For hilarity: The Internet Is For Porn.
For personal vindication: For Now.
For heartstrings tugging ballad: It's A Fine Fine Line.

The evening was not without personal drama. J and I pulled off some amazing stunts ourselves. After an hour of eating and shopping at Bugis Junction, we headed to the Drama Centre. Except the place was deserted. We re-checked the tickets. It was 7.50pm when we realised our 8pm musical was at the ESPLANADE!! Don't worry. J channeled Hamilton and got us there with 2 minutes to spare. We even found a parking spot right in front of the entrance! We got out of the car just in time to hear the final call. The bels were chiming as we dashed up.

After all that breathless rush, we weren't even the last ones in. There were a few others who came in after the program started. Maybe they went to the DBS Arts Centre.

An absolutely wonderful evening. (Thanks Davin, for the tickets!)

Conversation with a teacher

Last night, a teacher and I had a discussion about the recent article in TNP "Teachers can't do as they wish". Let's call this person, X. The following conversation is not verbatim. However, it is posted with the approval of X.

---start---

Me: So what do you think about teachers not being able to have a life outside of their duties in school?

X: There is no private life. There is a code of conduct that must be adhered to. A code of conduct that permeates all aspects of your public image. Religious leaders, politicians, Heads of State, they all have codes of conduct that goes beyond just the 9-to-5 routine. A teacher is no different.

Me: So what are you saying? That a teacher must be perfect?

X: No. But you don't go around tarnishing your own public image. Indulging in questionable behavior, and then getting caught. There are teachers who are smokers, but you don't smoke in front of the kids. You don't smoke with the kids. You smoke outside of the school and even then, don't get caught by the students.

Me: But what difference does it make? The kids are still exposed to all kinds of influences. So even if the teachers don't show it, the students will still see it on their own -- on tv, in movies, magazines, all that.

X: There's a time and place for everything. A teacher cannot have a personal agenda. I can't talk about religion. A teacher must uphold a professional image. A teacher's image and actions are more important than what is taught to students in class.

Me: So what happens to people who disagree with that? What happens to those who think that being a teacher should not be such a "high calling" -- its just a 9-to-5 job and I can do whatever I please outside of those hours?

X: If you want to be a teacher within the MOE organization, then those are the rules you'll have to live by. If you don't like it, pick another organization that supports your paradigm. There is no perfect organization, only what suits you best.

Me: So teachers don't get to give feedback if they think the rules are archaic and irrelevant?

X: They do. At the right time and the right place. Blogging about your dissatisfaction is not the place. Blogging questionable content not only affects your students, but the school and the other stakeholders. It puts your professionalism in the spot light and the schools have to take measures and account for your actions to the media and parents.

Me: Some people will say its not fair.

X: Life is not fair. As it is, which company will pay you to study? When you're employed as a teacher, your post-grad education NIE is paid for, and you get a salary the whole time you're studying. So, no, life is not fair.

---end---

oddities of our other halves

J has this weird habit of piling up his socks. He doesn't toss them in the wash until he gets this big pile. I've often asked how come he can't just pick them up & put them with the other dirty laundry. He does that so diligently with everything else he wears, so why not the socks? Its a mystery. Socks just pile up until wash day when I can't stand it anymore and dump the whole lot in for him. It doesn't make me mad. I'm just so curious about how my man's brain works. Is he nesting? Is he marking his territory? It can't be that he's lazy. The man mops, irons & washes dishes.

Do your men (or women) have odd habits that just can't be explained? I want to know. Tell. Tell.

Googling "Richard Lowe Slender Shapes"

On a whim, I decided to google "Richard Lowe Slender Shapes".

I found a page featuring Richard Lowe as a speaker in a seminar series by SIM on entrepreneurs:

Saturday September 13, 2008 from 10:00am - 12:00pm

SIM Management House

41 Namy Avenue
Singapore, Central Singapore

From a start-up that began as a fitness center in the King’s Arcade Shopping Centre, Bukit Timah Road, Richard Lowe has taken SLENDER SHAPES to sparkling new destinations in Singapore – and more centers are in the pipeline.

In this first seminar in their new Entrepreneur series, Mr Richard Lowe, founder and Managing Director of Slender Shapes, shares his story of how the company has positioned itself to address the culture of fitness, health and well-being that is rapidly becoming a multi-million dollar business.

Join them to hear Mr Richard Lowe’s entrepreneurial journey, from growing up in Oxford, working in Hong Kong, to leading a chain of health-fitness centers in Singapore and his strategy to grow the business to over 4,000 clubs in the next decade.

Another website talking about a book that featured Mr Lowe's Slender Shapes "success" story (the article was written on 02 September 2008):

With 15 years of experience in the health fitness industry, Richard said confidently, “I am in a strong position to know what is missing here in Asia and to be able to provide a different experience for ladies to achieve their health, fitness and weight management goals. Combining it with my entrepreneurial spirit, I would build the business with a sense of responsibility to face these challenges, yet enjoying the business as my own boss.”

88DB has a Slender Shapes franchise page on their business opportunities section:

Why buy a franchise?

"90% of franchise businesses are still operating after 10 years, whereas 82% of private businesses fail"

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce

Although only 8% of businesses are franchises, they represent 40% of all retail sales in the U.S.

... ...

The founder of Slender Shapes has been involved in launching some of the largest international chains of clubs in Asia. As such, the founder has great awareness to the uniquiness of doing business in Asia, moreover, Slender Shapes has been geared to cater for the Asian customer, taking in local and cultural tastes.
So what happened? What happened between September 13 and October 23? And why, with all that expertise, wasn't there a fool-proof contingency plan for refunds? Or maybe the cracks were there long ago but it pays in business, to be like a duck.

There's always hope for Mr Lowe's rebound. Look at her.

Is there hope for the members?

Slender Shapes' Richard Lowe calls me

    **Recap**

Last Tuesday, Mr Lowe called me. During that conversation, he shared that there were a group of potential investors and he hoped that they would take up his offer and thus, rescue the franchise from its doom.

On Friday morning, a staff of Slender Shapes gives me a shocking revelation on the state of affairs. I wrote about the conversation here.

That same afternoon, I received a call from the same staff and requests to take down the post were made. I gave an account of it here.

    **End recap**

At around 3pm yesterday, Mr Lowe calls me. He said he wanted to achieve the best possible outcome for every member and staff. He hoped that by next Friday, there would be a deal struck with investors that would ensure the survival of the Slender Shapes franchise. He affirmed that I had every right to post whatever I wanted, however, bad publicity scares investors and blogging about this saga contributes to the bad publicity.

I agree wholeheartedly that the best possible outcome would be if no one loses any money, especially the members.

I have over a thousand dollars invested in this membership and I don't want it to go to waste either.

Now, there is no way that my readership or reporting credibility compares with The New Paper (read their story about this saga) or Shin Min Daily. I have data to prove how pathetic my little blog is. I am no mrbrown or Xiaxue.

Moreover, there would not be bad press if he would just speak to the reporters and tell them his side of the story. A reliable source tells me that they want to get a balanced view but he has been evasive (this is as much as I know at this point of posting). I am not the one who sent out an email at 10.30pm last Saturday, scaring members into a anxious frenzy by unceremoniously stating that no refunds would be given, full or partial.

Also, there would be no bad press to write about if members didn't feel cheated in the first place. I wasn't the one who called the police last Thursday at the Serangoon Gardens branch. A Shin Min Daily reporter contacted me only because they had been tipped off by other members first. So what led them to feel cheated in the first place? And is he going to call them one by one and ask them not to speak to the press or go to Small Claims Court?

Mr Lowe, if you want members to rally around you and close ranks, you've got to give us something more substantial than the usual platitudes and clichés. Start with giving refunds.

He also said that because I did not know him personally, I would surmise from these past events that he was a crook, a cheat or even a liar. However, he has been visiting the various outlets everyday, showing members that he is not shirking responsibility.

It's gutsy of him to show his face but I think at this point, what will really appease angry members is to actually get their money back.

If it was obvious (even to the staff) that the clubs were in trouble, why were investors not secured earlier? Then we would have gone on enjoying the clubs and all this mess about non-refunds and closures would not even have come up.

I didn't get to finish the conversation with him because my mobile phone ran out of battery. I left a message with his staff and an alternative phone number to reach me, but he hasn't called me back.
