I regret pressing my loose mineral eye shadows

I thought I'd better give a run down of what happened when I attempted to press my mineral eye shadows with the binder I got from Aromatics and More.

I think its just me, but it was a tad messy. I covered my table with white paper and at the end of it, it was like a kid's art project, with smudges all over.

I pressed my entire Elegant Brown Quad and the Stonewashed Nudes Palette. And I can't decide if it was a good thing or not because aesthetics matter. I'm anal that way.

So what happened was: I used a binder from Aromatics and more. I knew I was supposed to achieve a sandy, clayish consistency. Not mud. Except, with each pot, it was a little different. So the end result is not pretty. I messed up 2 -- too muddy -- and I didn't pack the eyeshadows in properly, so after pressing, there's little gaps around the edges. Also, a full jar of SN eyeshadow can deliver 1/2 a pan (I'm using the kind you can buy from Starsmakeuphaven, that says "fits mac palettes").

On the bright side, the color payout for the Elegant Brown Quad wasn't compromised. Its still the same velvety finish and great color payout. I can't say the same for my Basalt, or Cream. Somehow, they're not as dark as they used to be.

According to Karen from Silk Naturals (my mineral make up fairy godmother), the binder I used "didn't have anything that evaporates in it. That makes it really hard for mattes especially- they never quite have the same "zing" after pressing."

(If you're not on the Silk Naturals forum, get on it!!)

So that's it. I think I'm done with my pressing experiment. And yes, I know, I should have just done 1 pot, but then, apart from the aesthetics and loss of color payout from Basalt & Cream, the rest are fine.

I never bother with pressing MMU because the powder flies everywhere. For transport can just pack them into those small ziplock bags you can buy at SKS.

In another blog somebody pressed her MMU with alcohol. So the MMU was wet for a while before drying up. You can buy the alcohol from Guardian I think.

hi eve+line,

actually, its not the transporting per se, but during transport, the powder will disperse through the sifter and its next opened, everything fluffs everywhere. That's why some people press it, I think.

Anyway, I believe that pressing it with alcohol works with some loose pigments (like the ones from MAC) but not mineral powders because once the alcohol evaporates, you're left with a pretty cake, but the second you touch your brush to it, it breaks up into powder again. At least that's what I found out from all those youtube reviews and forums. If she'd managed to do it, I'd like to find out how.

Yeah I meant that after transporting in those jars, the powder will fly everywhere after you open the jar. I do keep my foundations in the jars but since I use more at a go, I just use the brush to sweep everything up. Eyeshadows, however, can be a big mess which is why I think ziplocks could have been a better idea.

Another tip I found somewhere else is to use a small segment of cotton pads as a "stopper". It does work in containing the mess although of course there will be some wastage.

As for the pressing with alcohol bit, the example I found did not follow-up on how the pressed powders performed. Apparently you can mix some jojoba oil (I'm guessing you're talking about drops not teaspoons) with the alcohol so that the oil can do the binding after the alcohol evaporates.

Sorry I can't offer more as this is not something I'm doing personally. Good luck with your experiments!

sorry to hear that your pressing experiment didn't work :(

on the bright side, to make your loose e/s less messy, perhaps you could leave the sticker on at the top and only cut out and peel off the section that exposes only one hole. that what i do. that minimizes a ton of mess, although with certain glittery colours, the glitter does get everywhere. also, if u have the pressed powder from EM, they have this cheap cotton pad on the top, u could cut it up and use it as a stopper, as eve+line suggested. :)

i'm so used to loose minerals now, that the pressed ones that I bought from EDM are designated to be my travel ones, especially since there are 3 colours in each palette so that takes care of the shades. have u tried any of the edm palettes yet?

Hi Belle, I haven't tried EDM's pressed minerals yet. I'm waiting for Karen from SN to work her magic and come up with some fab pressed products. =)
